Join the Alabama Coastal Cleanup

If you’re in town next month and want to give a little back to the bay, the 39th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup is happening Saturday, September 19. Things get started at 8:00 a.m.

This year’s theme is “Get the Trash Out of the Splash,” and the goal is simple: help protect the local waterways and shoreline that make this area so special. You can sign up solo or bring your whole crew, whether that’s family, friends, or a group you’re traveling with.

It’s an easy way to spend a morning outdoors and connect with the community you’re visiting. Registration is online: sign up for the Coastal Cleanup here.

John Martin Nature Center Now Open at Flying Creek Nature Preserve

Good news for nature lovers: the John Martin Nature Center at Flying Creek Nature Preserve is officially open to the public. The preserve’s trails have been open since Phase I, so you can pair a walk with a stop inside the new center.

The nature center will host educational programs, community events, and hands-on learning focused on conservation, environmental education, and outdoor exploration. If you’re traveling with curious kids, it’s worth keeping on your radar.

Work is also starting on Phase II. Planned additions include a kayak and canoe launch, scenic creek overlooks, and more outdoor classrooms, so there’s more to look forward to on future visits.

The City is also starting a volunteer program for people who love nature, education, or welcoming visitors. For details, email flyingcreeknaturepreserve@FairhopeAL.gov or call 251-278-9963. Looking for more ways to get outside? Browse our guide to things to do in Fairhope.
